The government of The Gambia is dedicated to make tourism sustainable and has an efficient and responsible tourism policy. The government’s aim is to increase the contribution of tourism in the economy by making continuous efforts to broaden the tourism market, improve quality standards, and ensure rational use of the Tourism Development Area.
Every year, The Gambia sees an influx of thousands of international tourists from different parts of the world who wish to explore the varied cultural experience mixed with the beauty of sea, nature, sunshine, sand and wildlife of the country. The diverse variety of beautiful birds ranging from the tiny colourful Pygmy Kingfisher to much larger birds of prey are often said to attract lot of international travellers.
On top of that, the hospitality and friendly nature of the local Gambian people have won hearts all over the world and hence The Gambia is popularly known as the “The Smiling Coast” of Africa. Tourism has become the fastest-growing sector of the economy, contributing around 20% of the country’s GDP in 2019 and is a growing source of employment for the nation.
